Drug peddler drowns in bid to escape

KUALA TERENGGANU: A drug peddler, high on the state police wanted list, drowned when he jumped into a river in an attempt to evade arrest during a narcotics raid at Kampung Jeram in Manir, here, yesterday.

The man, together with two of his accomplices, plunged into the water upon seeing police officers in a van approaching them at 9.45am.

State anti-narcotics chief Superintendent Roslan Abdul Wahid said the officers then pursued the trio in a boat and managed to pluck one of the suspects from the river while another is believed to have escaped into a secondary jungle after swimming across the river.

Supt Roslan said divers from state Rescue and Fire Department retrieved the body of the 34-year-old suspect at 12.50pm.
